Preserving Hedgerows and Biodiversity

The goal? To contribute
to the sustainable management of
300 km of hedgerows
by 2032

In partnership with the Symbiose Normandie association, we are involved in an ambitious program to preserve the hedgerows of Normandy’s bocage landscape. By 2032, our goal is clear: to help ensure the sustainable management of 300 km of hedgerows in Normandy.

Why preserve the hedgerows?

Hedgerows are much more than simple landscape features.
They play a key role for the environment, agriculture, and climate:

  • 1
    A habitat for biodiversity

Hedgerows host an often-overlooked ecological diversity:

    • Up to 80 species of birds.
    • 35 species of mammals.
    • 100 species of insects.
    • Over 600 plant species.

This biodiversity naturally contributes to the protection of crops by limiting pest proliferation. Source : OFB

  • 2
    Natural soil protection

Thanks to their deep roots, hedges:

    • Promote deep water infiltration
    • Reduce erosion and surface runoff
    • Structure the soil and support underground life.
  • 3
    A natural reservoir of carbon

    Hedgerows store carbon.

That is why sustainable management is essential to preserve this natural asset and contribute to climate change mitigation

  • 4
    Protection for livestock

Hedgerows protect livestock from wind, sun, and harsh weather.

In Normandy, where cows spend an average of 180 days per year outdoors, hedgerows are key to their comfort.

Committing to the #Biodiversité Cause with Make.org

In 2024, Elle & Vire joined Make.org’s Major Cause “How can we protect and restore biodiversity together?” as a founding partner.

Consultation and reflection

The #Biodiversity citizen consultation, held from June 25 to September 22, 2024, mobilized 374,790 participants and collected 5,918 proposals to co-build action plans for biodiversity preservation.

Entreprises engagées pour la nature

Since 2022, Elle & Vire has been part of the “Entreprises Engagées pour la Nature” (Companies Committed to Nature) program run by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB).

This means that, in addition to adhering to the OFB’s 10 Common Principles, we are implementing an action plan validated by OFB experts. Regular monitoring makes it possible to track progress, assess effectiveness, and continuously improve our actions.
