Preserving Hedgerows and Biodiversity

The goal? To contribute
to the sustainable management of
300 km of hedgerows
by 2032

In partnership with the association Symbiose Normandie, Elle & Vire® is taking part in an ambitious programme to preserve and sustainably manage 300 km of hedgerows in the Normandy bocage by 2032.

Why preserving hedgerows?

Hedgerows are not merely landscape features; they improve soil quality,
promote biodiversity, and support crop sustainability.

  • 1
    A habitat for biodiversity

LHedgerows are true reservoirs of biodiversity, as they host:

    • Up to 80 species of birds
    • 35 species of mammals
    • 100 species of insects
    • Over 600 plant species

This natural richness helps protect crops by reducing the proliferation of pests. Source : OFB (French Office of Biodiversity)

  • 2
    Natural soil protection

Thanks to their deep roots, hedges play a key role in soil health. In particular, they help:

    • Promote deep water infiltration
    • Reduce erosion and surface runoff
    • Structure the soil
    • Support underground life
  • 3
    A natural reservoir of carbon

    Hedges store carbon.

That’s why sustainable management is essential to preserve this natural asset and contribute to climate change mitigation.

  • 4
    Protection for livestock

Hedgerows provide herds with natural protection from the wind, sun and harsh weather.

In France, where cows spend an average of 180 days* per year outside, hedgerows contribute to their well-being.
