The Rock offers an idyllic setting on a rocky promontory southeast of the Zanzibar archipelago. Depending on the tides, you can walk, swim or sail to the restaurant from Michamwi Pingwe beach. Created in 2010 by Nigel Firman and his associates, the restaurant offers tempting dishes such as a fish Carpaccio with passion fruit and an olive oil sauce; Octopus salad with potatoes, cashew nuts and tomatoes in olive oil; Squid and shrimp marinated in coconut; Curried fish of the day with basmati rice; not forgetting the wonderful seafood grill ("The Rock Special", which consists of lobster, slipper lobster, shrimp, fish fillet and squid) ... The five chefs showcase the fish and seafood sourced at surrounding fisheries (the restaurant promotes the local economy by partnering several local fishing villages). The menu also boasts a la carte pasta dishes (especially Tambi, Swahili spaghetti with spices) and a few meat dishes.

The Rock has a pared down decor that reflects its heritage (the restaurant used to be a fishing hut). Nothing disturbs your eating experience and the breathtaking view – glittering turquoise water as far as the eye can see on the one side, and the white sandy beach on the other. An absolute must-visit address if you are planning a stay in Zanzibar, as is the Zanzest Beach Bungalows Restaurant (Jambiani). Run by David and Annalisa, a couple who fell in love with the island, the Zanzest Beach Bungalows Restaurant (http://www.zanzest.co.tz) is famous throughout the archipelago for its delicious Italian specialties.
